Mudroom & Laundry Room Design: The Most Overlooked Spaces in Your Home

Unpopular opinion… Your kitchen isn’t the hardest working room in your home…

Yes, I said it. While we think of the kitchen as the heart of the home and we do spend quite a bit of time there, I think the hardest working room is often overlooked. It is the space we run in and out of every single morning and afternoon, we drop our muddy boots in, throw our backpacks down, our sports equipment hits the walls as it is lugged around, our dirty laundry piles up, it’s where the dogs come in from the fall weather muddy and gross, our winter coats hang and drip as they dry… It is the one room that we don’t seem to pay enough attention to here in Upstate NY.

At DMB, we are often re-imagining mudrooms, laundry rooms and entryways. We hear so often how these spaces lack functionality, storage and durability. Our perfect formula is a hardworking tile floor, durable and functional cabinetry, great lighting for the inevitable laundry and overall a space that makes you happy to come home too.

Brick Flooring… Really?

I know, I know… Brick is difficult to take care of, it is porous, it shows wear… This isn’t really brick. It is a porcelain tile that is a dream to keep clean. All the muddy paw prints and boots you want can be in this space. What was once a very tight hallway, coat closet and a home office that was barely being used (who can work in a dark back corner of the house comfortably?), is now one epic mudroom and laundry room.

Cabinets for Days!

Sky blue may be one of the happiest cabinet colors in our line up at the Studio. The commitment to color in this space brings character, joy and personality to this home. A classic combination with the red brick-look tiles and a perfect contrast to the white walls, I fall in love with this space every time I see it.

Each tall cabinet is home to hooks for backpacks and shelving for the kids personal belongings. Below each locker space is a drawer for shoes keeping the dirt contained. In the little cubbies above are hidden off-season wear such as gloves, scarves and more. Of course we didn’t forget mom and dad, who also each have their own space for coats and bags.

Let in the Light

I will never understand dark moody laundry rooms… If I wear white, it is inevitable something will end up on my sweater. In order to clean it properly, light is essential. While the window existed in the original home office, the back door to the hot tub did not. Choosing an option with glass flooded the space with sunlight. Combine the use of natural light in the space with the reflective white walls and you have the perfect space to attend to all of the laundry.

The DMB Approach

We approach every project and home with an exceptional level of detail in not just the aesthetic appeal of our selections but the functionality and longevity they will provide to the families that live in these homes. The mudroom and laundry room in “The Georgia” are just a glimmer into the home that has a place for everyone, endless storage, joyful colors and stunning features. Stay tuned to see more…
